Tricks to Accessorize Your Outfits
You see others do it effortlessly, making accessorizing look like a breeze. But for some reason, the secret to that polished look keeps eluding you. Every time you think you’ve nailed it, a quick glance in the mirror brings that familiar wave of insecurity, leaving you back where you started—stuck in a cycle of plain outfits.
Not this time.
This time, you’re going to be armed with the same tips, tricks, and secrets I’ve discovered over my 17+ years in the accessories business. Give these tricks a try, and see how they can work for you, too.
P.S.: They’re effective even if you’re not a fashionista and fear making the wrong choices when it comes to accessorizing. Pinky promise!
1. Choose Accessories that Mimic Your Features
Many women who don’t accessorize often overlook this essential step: looking at their features and choosing accessories that mirror what they see.
This simple adjustment can boost your confidence and help you stop struggling with accessory choices.
Start by examining your features and body shape.
Do you have a curvy body or more angular lines?
Is your hair curly or straight?
What shape is your face—round, square, or heart-shaped?
Understanding these aspects will make your accessory choices much easier.
For example, If you have soft, rounded features, opt for handbags, shoes, and jewelry that echo those curves.
EXTRA TIP: This principle applies to prints too!
2. Choose Accessories that Mimic Your Outfit
This next trick builds on the first concept but focuses on how your accessories complement your clothing. Look at the lines and shapes of your outfit and choose accessories that resonate with them.
Most of my clients find this incredibly helpful, especially when wearing patterns or prints.
Remember: Your accessories don’t have to be an exact match; they should resemble the movement or style of your clothing. The goal is to create a cohesive look.
EXTRA TIP: Avoid matching prints directly. For instance, if you’re wearing a leopard shirt, resist the urge to pair it with leopard-patterned earrings.
Instead, choose a necklace with oval links that mimic the spots in the print.
Got it?
3. Create a Cluster of Accessories
Now, here is my favorite tip to accessorize your outfits! Gather a collection of accessories that you love and think would work well together. You can base your cluster on metal colors, a specific color palette, or simply items that you know complement each other.
One word of warning: Stick to 3-4 pieces to avoid looking too matchy-matchy or outdated.
Here are some do's for this step:
Base your group on metal color.
Choose a specific color theme (like red, blue, or boho, etc.).
Consider the level of formality.
Pair items that you know work well together.
Let’s illustrate: Imagine you have three favorite accessories that you often wear together. When you’re looking to spice up a basic jeans outfit, you can grab this grouping to instantly elevate your look!
When you feel stuck or want to pizzaz a basic jeans outfit, you can add this grouping of accessories to it!
And if you want to add some flair to your little black dress?
This grouping will help you achieve a stylish vibe that reflects your personality!
EXTRA TIP: This grouping concept is also fantastic for travel.
Create a folder on your phone and take photos of your accessory groupings for quick access when you’re unsure about what to wear!
So there you have it—three simple yet effective tricks for choosing the right accessories for your outfits:
Trick 1: Mimic Your Shape. Choose accessories that resemble your body shape to create visual balance.
Trick 2: Mimic Your Outfit. Reflect the shapes and lines in your clothing with your accessories.
